What is a Smart Meter

A smart meter is a device which will provide an accurate meter reading from an Electricity, Gas or Water supply, eliminating estimated bills and manage consumption efficiently.

A SMART meter puts your business in control of your usage of utilities for budgetary purposes, cuts wastage and reduces your organisation’s carbon footprint.

  • All existing NHH (non half hourly) electricity meters (profile classes 5-8) will need to have SMART Metering installed by 6th April 2014.
  • Any new NHH meter installations (profile classes 5-8) that occur after 6th April 2009 will need to be a SMART Meter.
  • As from 6th April 2014, electricity suppliers will not be able to supply electricity to any relevant premises other than through a SMART Meter.
  • Any gas meter using between 732 MWh (732,000 kWh) and 58,600 MWh (58,600,000 kWh) per annum will need to have SMART Metering installed by 6th April 2014.
  • Any new gas meter installations that occur after 6th April 2009 and that fit the consumption criteria above will need to be a SMART Meter.
  • As from 6th April 2014, gas suppliers will not be able to supply gas to any relevant premises other than through a SMART Meter.

The Meter Mimic option for electricity

The alternative solution for both HH & NHH AMR is deploying the “Meter Mimic” logging device to obtain consumption data from the existing meter infrastructure.

The Meter Mimic approach gives many benefits including:

  • No Meter exchanges are required so no interruption to power.
  • Consumption data is unaffected by change of supplier etc

 

GAS and WATER Monitoring

The “Meter Mimic” unit can also be used to monitor Gas and Water consumption in the same way as Electricity and offers the same benefits.
